ToW #12: Get Kissable Lips

I've been having a marathon of MTV's classic reality show featuring Lauren Conrad and oodles of Heidi (things were so different before that Speidi mess): The Hills.
While watching and reminiscing over Season 1, I've realized that Lauren always has fabulous lips which I'm jealous of. I mean, who wouldn't want perfectly moisturized lips?
Although Chapstick may seem to be a temporary solution for chapped lips, there's a better way to keep your lips hydrated and it can simply be found in your refrigerator: a cucumber!

LC suggests slicing up a cold cucumber and pressing it to your lips for a few minutes. The veggie has healing properties (think cold slicked cucumbers on your eyes for instant under-eye bag relief!) as it can relieve dryness and irritation.

But don't just rely on cucumber! Remember to drink water everyday to keep your pout and body hydrated, especially as summer rolls around.

ToW #11: What Do Men Think of Women’s Fashion?

It's the question every woman (especially in college) thinks about: "What do men think of what I'm wearing?"

So to help out the ladies - specifically in college - here's a video that I created that delves into the inner-thinkings of the male mind so that you'll know just what they're thinking when you slip on those ever-comfy Uggs. You'll also find some tips from these five men concerning what's really important when you dress. Enjoy!

ToW #10: Try Tangerine

Orange is a difficult color to work with - it's bold and risky for a lot of us so we prefer to stay away from it. But this spring, it's time to take some risks.

Tangerine has been all over the spring 2012 runway, from J.Crew to Jill Stuart. The trendsetting color, if worn right, can instantly brighten up any outfit.

So here are some tips to help you get started with incorporating tangerine oranges into your wardrobe:

Morgan Geiger, a Cal Poly freshman, believe that anyone can work tangerines:

"I think everyone could pull off the color orange if it's in a small quantity like a shirt, skirt or even a bag. And a lighter orange works well too because it's easier to pull off."

If you want to slowly edge into the tangerine trend, try a simple orange bag or clutch like this Tory Burch mini bag or this satchel from Urban Outfitters, and add it to your favorite outfit for a pop of color.

Geiger chose to color block and pair tangerine with blue, effortlessly creating a cute and simple outfit. To color block with tangerine, pair with pinks and blues.

Geiger color blocks with simple tangerine top and a blue floral skirt.

Here are some other ideas:

  • Pair a tangerine/orange dress with a light cardigan so you don't feel "too" orange.
  • Try mixing tangerine with patterns like Morgan did. Adding patterns to your outfit will make the tangerine less vibrant and showy if you're still easing into the trend.
  • Avoid the Halloween look and pair tangerine with whites and creams instead of black.

Fashion is about taking risks and trying out pieces and colors you would normally shy away from, so try something new. Experiment with tangerine and tell me your favorite outfit!

ToW #9: Preserve Your Jeans

This week's tip has to do with  a clothing item that every one of us has. From two pairs to maybe 14, jeans are probably the most purchased item for each one of us and it's definitely important that we know how to care for our beloved pairs. So here's three quick tips for your jeans!

1. When trying and buying dark wash jeans, make sure you buy the size that fits tightest on you. Dark wash jeans are made with elastine (because it holds dark colors well) and they will stretch out after a wear or two. You don't want to buy dark jeans that are loose and find them to be even looser two weeks later!

2. Wash your jeans as little as possible. I know you might think that sounds gross, but it actually preserves your jeans! And when you do throw them in the laundry, make sure you use cold water as heat can damage the jeans. I turn my jeans inside out before washing so that it keeps them from wearing out quickly.

3. Once in a while, to clean dark jeans, fill up a bathtub with room temperature water and add 1/8 cup of vinegar to the water. Put the jeans in the tub, laying them flat and let them soak for 20 minutes. Let them air-dry and the dark color of your jeans will be set!

And if you're looking for some cute jeans to add to your collection, here's some of my favorite brands:

Hudson Jeans & Joe's Jeans: super comfortable, the signature pockets flatter any tush, and I'm wearing a pair of Hudson's right now!

Gap Jeans & Levi's: classic, cheaper than designer brands but about the same quality, and so many fits to choose from.

Happy jean hunting!

ToW #8: Be Sun Safe

Summer is upon us and weekends spent out enjoying the sun will definitely increase as July rolls around tomorrow. Everywhere it's heard that the sun is bad for you and you should layer up on sunscreen. But do we actually ever take all those statements in? Many people don't see the risk in taking in too much sun but it's actually drastic for your skin. Especially if you want to have beautiful skin when you're older.

So here are a few simple tips to keep your skin looking great:

Don't stress too much over the SPF numbers. SPF 100+ is not twice as strong as SPF 50. It's actually only a few percentages higher. So whether you have SPF 30 or SPF 70, reapply that sunscreen!

If you have sensitive skin, definitely try Supergoop! SPF 30 Sunscreen Swipes from Sephora. I received a sample from Sephora and tested the swipes out earlier this week. The swipes are non-oily and slides over your skin smoothly without leaving a white residue like other sunscreens do. With Zinc providing powerful UV protection, Green Tea reducing irritation and redness, and Vitamin E to soften the skin, Supergoop! is a great source of protection from those harmful rays that you encounter everyday.

But remember that sunscreen isn't only for the beach. If you're ever going out, even on a cloudy day, apply sunscreen to keep your skin healthy and wrinkles at bay.

Enjoy the sun (safely!)

ToW #6: Half-Moon Spring Nail Trend

All over the Spring 2011 Runway, the inverse french nail manicure has proved to be a lasting spring trend as it's everyone on the runway.

So here's a step-by-step tutorial for the half-moon manicure as it's definitely a hot trend to try this spring.

Falling in love with the manicure itself, I decided to try it out with a silver moon at the base of the nail and a navy color for the rest. I'm happy to say that I'm completely satisfied with my nails and I do think they look really classy.

It's actually an extremely easy manicure to do yourself. If you have hole reinforcements, they'll help immensely with making the half-moon at the base of the nail.

So as a DIY:

1. After painting a base coat, choose a color that you would like to be your half-moon. Whites, silvers, grays, or any neutral will work perfectly. Paint your entire nail with this color.
2. Let the color completely dry then take your hole reinforcements and stick them to the bottom of the nail, creating an arch that will be your half-moon.
3. Take your second color, a complement to the one you chose as your half-moon, and paint the rest of the nail.
4. After it has dried, peel the reinforcements off slowly and polish a top coat over.

Tip of the Week #5: Eyeliner Troubles?

We all have that problem where our eyeliner just does not want to cooperate. You'll try to line your eyes with it but it'll crumble and smear when you put it on your lids. So what do you do?

Here's a simple solution:

Store your eyeliner in the freezer for 15 minutes before use. This way, the tip of the liner will be firm and slide across your lids ever-so-smoothly.

No more worries regarding smears for flawlessly lined eyes!
