Saturday Faves: The Perfect Spring Dress

If you're a college student like me, you know how amazing you feel when you slip on a dress in the morning. It's comfortable and you instantly look cute while wearing one article of clothing. What more could you want for a sunny, busy day?

My favorite spring dress is one that incorporates color - because spring is about being colorful - and fits perfectly because if it doesn't fit well, you don't feel good in it.

So my favorite dress of the moment is this cutout dress from Urban Outfitters.

The cutouts aren't drastic enough so that you can wear this dress to class or on a night out. The blue and red colors are also perfect for brightening anyone's day.

Pair the dress with a cardigan, like this one from H&M, for those mornings when it's a little chilly out. Slip on your favorite pair of flats, wedges, or sandals, and you're good to go for the rest of the day.

What would you pair with this dress?

ToW #10: Try Tangerine

Orange is a difficult color to work with - it's bold and risky for a lot of us so we prefer to stay away from it. But this spring, it's time to take some risks.

Tangerine has been all over the spring 2012 runway, from J.Crew to Jill Stuart. The trendsetting color, if worn right, can instantly brighten up any outfit.

So here are some tips to help you get started with incorporating tangerine oranges into your wardrobe:

Morgan Geiger, a Cal Poly freshman, believe that anyone can work tangerines:

"I think everyone could pull off the color orange if it's in a small quantity like a shirt, skirt or even a bag. And a lighter orange works well too because it's easier to pull off."

If you want to slowly edge into the tangerine trend, try a simple orange bag or clutch like this Tory Burch mini bag or this satchel from Urban Outfitters, and add it to your favorite outfit for a pop of color.

Geiger chose to color block and pair tangerine with blue, effortlessly creating a cute and simple outfit. To color block with tangerine, pair with pinks and blues.

Geiger color blocks with simple tangerine top and a blue floral skirt.

Here are some other ideas:

  • Pair a tangerine/orange dress with a light cardigan so you don't feel "too" orange.
  • Try mixing tangerine with patterns like Morgan did. Adding patterns to your outfit will make the tangerine less vibrant and showy if you're still easing into the trend.
  • Avoid the Halloween look and pair tangerine with whites and creams instead of black.

Fashion is about taking risks and trying out pieces and colors you would normally shy away from, so try something new. Experiment with tangerine and tell me your favorite outfit!
